Waiting to Hold You

It is rather hard to believe that in just weeks; I will become a Grandmother. This photo is so special to me. “Waiting to Hold You” is its title. It not only depicts my daughter’s and my son-in-law’s anticipation, but it also symbolizes for me the anticipation, that my husband and I feel about becoming grandparents for the first time.
How is it that our second child is old enough to be starting a family of her own? It just can’t be that long ago that we brought her into our own home for the first time. And yet, she is still our child. She has grown into a beautiful woman, of course. However, we will hold her in our hearts forever, as our child.
Does she have any idea, what this child will bring into her life? What joys and tears that she will share with her child. How fast he will grow, and how many experiences they will share. How much she will develop and mature while raising her child. What new depths she will reach, each time he asks “why” and she searches for that perfect answer. What “wonder” she will experience through the eyes of her child. What “humility” she will feel, when her child questions why she is inconsistent.
As a last resort will she say, “because I said so”, at the end of the day when everyone is tired but her child? Hopefully, she will just tuck him into bed with a good night story (it could be Goodnight Moon, or his own personal favorite). Then she will circle him in her arms, as she is in this photo, give him a good night kiss, and say an “I love you”. For the best part of this circle of life is the “I Love You”.
